Top 10 All Time Tag Teams
May 20, 2024At the start of 2024, I have been and forth on doing this. So, I figured out what better time to do my top ten all-time list of tag teams and singles wrestlers than now. I have racked my brain on a fair and logical formula for making this list, especially since this is not a personal favorites list. Well, my approach to this exercise is to go on with what I watched in my life, popularity, accolades/accomplishments, and longevity pretty simple, I think.
So, unfortunately I apologize to the Wild Samons, The Funks, Bruiser Brody & Stan Hansen, Bruiser & Crusher, The Blackjacks, Fabulous Ones (Haven’t tapped into the Memphis Wrestling wormhole yet), Brisco Brothers, Patterson & Stevens plus so many more I haven’t seen or found much of their matches but I’m working on it (laughs).
Also, there may have been a period of time where the Young Bucks could have been a part of this exercise but since the start of the promotion AEW the once independent darling team have only hurt their cause and legacy eliminating themselves from the conversation. With that being said as clear as possible, here are my honorable mentions which some teams in this group are still active and could do more with their careers.
Honorable Mentions
Still Active: The Usos, FTR & The New Day

The Briscoes (Mark & Jay): This hurts to write because this team had more to accomplish but the sudden death of Jay Briscoe hurt professional wrestling completely and their time to be a legendary team on big stages was cut short. But they did have an amazing career as well as matches especially their set of matches with FTR. Who knows what could have happened, but the Briscoes belong in this conversation but landed in my honorable mention.

Harlem Heat: Another one of the forgotten teams from WCW Harlem Heat would be on some people’s top ten but are honorable mention here which is not a knock on them as much as it is a reminder of how much success the top ten teams have to keep Booker T and Stevie Ray off the list.

New Age Outlaws: What was originally a put together team Road Dogg Jesse James and Bad Ass Billy Gunn the New Age Outlaws were important to the tag team scene during the attitude era. Of course, being a part of the popular group DX did not hurt but was not enough to crack the list.

The Rockers: The last team in my honorable mentions are the Rockers, who were an exciting team in the golden era of WWF’s tag team scene. Yes, one of the greatest performers came out of this group with Shawn Michaels but the team, while exciting and memorable also were in some ways a WWF off shoot of the Rock-N-Roll express regardless of if that is fair or not they just missed the cut.

Now here is my list of the top ten all-time tag teams, where naturally we start at number ten.
#10 The Hardys/ The Dudley Boys/Edge & Christian: The number ten spot was impossible to pick one of these teams, so I decided to split it three ways. For a lot of people when they think of the attitude era and the chaos it usually involves the Hardys, Dudleys, and Edge/Christian in one of their many crazy multi team matches especially the TLC matches they made famous. Their combined accolades are amazing, but their legacies have certainly lived on inspiring future teams if not helping their careers along the way.

#9 The Steiner Brothers: If WCW did something right during its time it would the tag teams they had throughout and one of those teams was the Steiner Brothers. Although they did not stay anywhere too long, WCW would certainly be their home, but they had some good matches all over the world in various promotions elevating their tag division instantly which is something special hence their place in the top ten.

#8 Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard: This may be one of those captain obvious statements, but Arn & Tully crawled so teams like FTR could run. Two of the original four horsemen became one of the best technical tag teams to ever step in the ring. Even their time in the WWE/WWF as the Brain Busters was successful making an already talented division better solidifying their place in history.

#7 The Von Erichs & Fabulous Freebirds: Like the number ten spot, the number spot is a combo that is so intertwined they cannot be separated. The Von Erichs and Freebirds had one of the best rivalries in wrestling history along with being the centerpiece of a promotion for years with World Class setting the bar for tag team feuds going forward.

#6 The Rock-n-Roll Express: Without question one of if not the original teenage heartthrob team, Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson were the premiere good guy team in wrestling. In demand everywhere they went, the rock and roll had great matches especially with the Midnight Express that stand up today, not to mention the tons of spin off and copycat teams that tried to emulate them but were not close.

#5 Demolition: Before the Usos and New Day became the standard for excellence as far tag teams in WWE, Demolition was that standard. Having one the most successful long reigns as champions, the golden era of WWE tag teams its crown jewel team was Ax and Smash who dominated that era.

Unfortunately, as time has gone on their place in history has been polarizing or controversial to say the least but absolutely should be acknowledged and not forgotten for what they meant to wrestling during their careers.
#4 The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane): The greatness that was the Rock-n-Roll Express would not have been possible without the Midnight Express. Led by manager Jim Cornette, the Midnight Express is one of the most underrated or forgotten teams in history. Either the duo Dennis Condrey and Bobby Eaton or Stan Lane and Bobby Eaton the Midnight could have a great match with any team, and that versatility is why they are in the top five of all-time for me.

#3 The Hart Foundation: Growing up they were one of my favorite teams, but the Hart Foundation certainly is one of the greatest tag teams ever. Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart were the foundation (Pun intended) for one of the greatest tag team divisions ever and having some impactful title runs easily puts them in my top three.

#2 The British Bulldogs: The last two spots were a coin flip for me because you cannot go wrong with either team at number one. But my all-time favorite tag team the British Bulldogs are the most complete and well-rounded tag team in modern day wrestling. Davey Boy Smith and Dynamite Kid were incredible everywhere they went but sadly the crippling back injury and decline of Dynamite Kid did cut their potential long run short and fall short of number one.

#1 The Road Warriors: Of course, the number one tag team of all time is universally beloved and revered for what they did for tag teams going forward. Hawk and Animal the Road Warriors were one of the big main event attractions around the world regardless of the promotions they were in. One of the first tag teams to be the centerpiece of the promotion they had memorable moments and matches, were and possibly still are standard all tag teams aspire to be, and were without question the most imitated team in history with teams like the Powers of Pain, Blade Runners, Authors of Pain and Demolition to a degree their influence from the look to the style of teams still is felt today and is deserving of the title greatest tag team of all time.
