NXT No Mercy Review

Last night was NXT’s No Mercy, and it was a decent show to end WWE’s weekend. Here is my review of the show with the new rating scale, which will be up to six because of the match card.

NXT Tag Team Championship Match
Chase U is clearly popular in NXT, but I just can’t get into it. Frazer and Axiom would have some solid matches against particular teams who like that specific style, which is fine but does have a ceiling.  Andre Chase is good, but he was absolutely shocked by Frazer and Axiom winning back the titles so quickly.  Holland turning on Chase U means they see something in him, but he is still rough around the edges. However, someday, you could see him in the North American or NXT title scene.

Wes Lee vs. Zachary Wentz

Wes Lee and Zachary Wentz had a good match. The “TNA” chants were strong throughout the match. Wentz is good, but Wes Lee is something else. While the table spot was a bit awkward, the end of the match made it all come together. Lee tried to hit Wentz with a chair only to be stopped by Trey Miguel, costing Lee the match. Wentz winning the match may have been a spoiler for what’s going to happen in the main event, but hopefully, we get Wes Lee versus Trey Miguel next.

NXT Women’s North American Championship Match
I said I wasn’t going to watch this match because of Wendy Choo, but I decided to watch and have a stream-of-conscious approach here. OK… Choo’s entrance and presentation are Orange Cassidy meets cheeky spooky, and it sucks. I don’t know how anyone can defend this, honestly. Kelani Jordan can be a solid fan favorite high flyer. Someday, she will have some real promise.

Again, I DO NOT want to be mean towards Wendy Choo, who is probably decent in the ring, but this presentation and her size don’t work!!! The attempt to make Choo like the Fiend is beyond embarrassing, so the match was not good, but there is plenty of room for Jordan to grow, and they will scrap this gimmick for Wendy Choo, please!

NXT North American Championship Match
HBK and company clearly think highly of Tony D’Angelo, but this Sopranos meets the Godfather thing has run its course. Maybe I’m wrong. Oba Femi is a superstar. He crushes that classic airport test. Only having 21 matches in his career is insane.  The “OBA” chants indicate how much of a superstar Femi is already. D’Angelo has some power, which I did not expect. I had to give more props to Tony D’Angelo, but Oba Femi was money. You cannot miss it but a very good match.

NXT Women’s Championship Match
Jaida Parker is a smoke show (Hey I’m a guy, so sue me), but she can be a big star in the future. Despite her size, Roxanne Perez is the real deal. Perez is so good as a heel that this version of her is easily my favorite. It was a very good match, and Parker had a great outing, but Giulia arrived and challenged Perez, definitely strengthening that Women’s division with legit threats and some good matches ahead for Perez.

NXT Championship Match
I am still about 50/50 about him, but Joe Hendry is over with this crowd. I can’t take that away from him. Ethan Page looks much better here in NXT as the bad guy champion. Trick Williams is still a star, even as the guest referee. Hendry is good in the ring. His power is impressive, but Hendry has this crowd in his hands, but he can go.

The end of the match went how I expected with Ethan Page winning, much to Williams and Hendry’s chagrin. It was a good match that may have made me a slight believer in Hendry. Pete Dunne attacking Trick Williams at the end and staring down Ethan Page is promising if it leads to Dunne back in the main event picture on NXT.
